  • Hi Steve,

I wanted to let you know about my son who also became a National Master in a breakthrough tournament at the World Open U2200.
Scott Low, 17, is in his senior year in high school in Silver Spring, MD.

Scott played in the U2200 section at the World Open in 2008 and lost his first 2 games en route to a 5/9
    score.

This year was a different story. He played in the 3 day section and started off by winning all 5 G/45's
on Day 1. Then, Scott drew both games on Day 2. On the final day, he drew in the first game probably missing a win and then in the final crucial game faced a player whom he lost to last year in Round 7. To make it more difficult, he had black, but still played for a win. It was an close game and I was concerned at times, but in the end he won and had 2 queens on the board when his opponent resigned.
Scott tied for first with 7.5/9 and the co winner was William Stewart whom he had defeated in Round 5! They each won $10,500 splitting the $14,000 1st place and the $7,000 2nd place prizes.
More importantly to me, his rating went from 2175 to 2239!

    Tim
